Best restaurant in Criccieth

"Dylan's Criccieth" in Criccieth, Wales, is an outstanding restaurant that is part of the small, award-winning Dylan's chain. It is distinguished by its location on the coast of the Llŷn Peninsula and its connection to the local Welsh culture. The restaurant is housed in an iconic Art Deco building originally designed in the 1930s by the famous architect Clough Williams-Ellis, who is also known for the nearby Portmeirion. This historic building, known as Morannedd, has been lovingly restored to preserve its characteristic curved lines and large windows, which offer breathtaking views of Cardigan Bay, the beach, and Criccieth Castle. Since its opening in 2015, the restaurant has become a popular meeting place for locals and tourists alike, who appreciate the combination of top-notch food, stylish ambiance, and proximity to the sea.

Local ingredients in Welsh cuisine

The menu at "Dylan's Criccieth" is heavily inspired by the regional surroundings, emphasizing fresh, local ingredients, particularly seafood from the waters of North Wales. A highlight is the "Seafood Chowder," a creamy soup featuring a rich mix of locally caught fish, mussels, and shrimp, enhanced with fresh herbs and often regarded as a must-try among guests. Equally popular is the "Anglesey Lobster," a luxurious dish where the lobster is served either grilled or with garlic butter, perfectly showcasing the quality of the Welsh coast. For those preferring something lighter, the "Dressed Crab Salad" offers a fresh combination of crab meat, crisp vegetables, and a homemade dressing that highlights the flavors of the sea. The homemade sourdough pizzas, such as the "Welsh Mussel Pizza" with cream and cider, are also a favorite, showcasing a creative blend of tradition and innovation.

Sustainable dining in Wales

The drink selection complements the food remarkably well and also reflects a focus on local offerings. Particularly noteworthy is the "Welsh Mule," a cocktail made with locally distilled gin and ginger beer, which is a refreshing choice celebrating Welsh spirit culture. The afternoon tea, featuring a selection of homemade scones, clotted cream, and jam, is a delight that combines British heritage with a touch of Dylan’s flair. For beer lovers, there is a selection of local beers that harmoniously round off the dishes.

Seafood specialties in North Wales

The atmosphere at "Dylan's Criccieth" is vibrant and inviting, characterized by a modern yet cozy design that respects the historical architecture of the building. The large windows ensure that guests can enjoy spectacular sea views from nearly every table, making the restaurant particularly unforgettable during sunsets or stormy weather. It is a place suitable for families, couples, or friends, with service often described as friendly, efficient, and warm. The staff takes pride in sharing the history of the building and the origins of the ingredients with guests, adding a personal touch to the visit.

FAB-U-LOUS! What a beautiful place, on right in the coats in Criccieth! Incredible art deco building, sympathetically decorated creating a wonderful warm atmosphere. The food was delicious, garlic and chilli prawns were wonderful! Staff were excellent, and squeezed us in despite a full house. Thank you! Would highly recommend!

We were pleasantly surprised by the portion size of the artisan bread starter. The bread was just the right amount fluffy and covered in lots of good quality butter. But you may not have any room for dessert left, proceed with caution! Pastas were nice but nothing special. They also have a great selection of cocktails. The restaurant is located in a lovely area, just by the sea. And I really liked the interior.

Lovely stop off for a drink. A very nice small red and coffee with cream. No drama about the dog either with a free treat and dog water bowls. Staff were really nice too and busy in what is quite understandably a popular spot on the shore in the town.

Superb atmosphere and food. Not cheap but very good and worth the extra few pounds. Staff very helpful and friendly. Even found a small pearl in the mussels.

Fine for a cuppa at the east end of the Prom, but something with it would be nice without having to order a poah dessert. What about selling packets of biscuits, kitkats or the like at the bar? That should stop people trying to get food on thecheap but would encourage the drinks trade.

My food was lacking flavour. My lasagne was almost burnt and incredibly dry. Very very poor. Staff are excellent serving the food. Very expensive and nothing special. I hope to other places in Criccieth by choice now.

It is absolutely an option for fabulous dining. I had the gnocchi, which was tasting as an improved recipe, never enjoyed a gnocchi like the one this evening, while melting in my mouth I could taste the cheese the semolina and the beetroot, what's a master chefe recipe. Incredibly sophisticated. The Hake was well presented and cooked but the taste.... The sauces had a mixture of mustard and leek and potatoes. The tiramisu was not so tastie missing a bit of sugar, but overall ok the biscuits were an elegant touch. Absolutely recommend but is not a 5 star.
